Farewell to an Officer and a Gentleman
             Brigadier General Antonio P. Abaya


BORN on August 21, 1929, Antonio P. Abaya served with courage and dedication in his
long career with the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP). After completing his
secondary education at the Candon High School, he enrolled and subsequently
obtained a Bachelor of Science degree from the Philippine Military Academy.

Commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in March, 1953, he served the Armed Forces of the
Philippines in various capacities, including co-commander of the 20th Battalion Combat
Team (BCT) in Central Luzon fighting insurgents. He moved on to fighting criminal and
vice syndicates as co-commander of the Philippine Constabulary in Rizal and Olongapo
City. He also served as an instructor at the Philippine Military Academy (PMA).

He was subsequently assigned to various positions, including Regional Commander of
the Integrated National Police in Bicol and AFP attache in Bangkok. In his 28 years of
service, he received various awards and commendations, including four Distinguished
Service Stars, the Most Exalted Order of the White Elephant, and the PMA Alumni
Association Cavalier Award.

While serving in the Armed. Forces, Abaya also held concurrent positions in
government. He served as head of the National Land Transport Management from
1973 to 19791 and was detailed with the Ministry of Energy for an extended period, a
posting that had him play a key role in crafting emergency measures during the oil
crisis:m the 1970s.

Upon his retirement, Abaya worked with the private sector as well as in various
socio-civic organizations including the Philippine National Red Cross, the Philippine
Tuberculosis Society, the Rotary Club, and other Community and professional
organizations.

Brig. Gen. Abaya passed away on August 24, 2008, at the age of 79. His remains lie at
the Heritage Park, Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City.  Interment was held, August 30, 2008,
after the 9 a.m. mass.   

We extend our condolences to the family of General Abaya, his wife Din, children
Joyce, Mila, Jojo, and 0ca, in-laws, grandchildren, and other relatives, and together
with them pray for the eternal repose of his soul.
